Tommy Wiseau Breaks Down a Scene in "The Disaster Artist"
Released on 03/12/2018
Hi, this is Tommy Wiseau, I am creator of The Room.
I will be doing the scene from The Disaster Artist,
I did not hit her, I did not, oh hi Mark.
It was created by James Franco, and they did very good job.
I wanna stress that.
[Sandy] Action.
I did not hit her.
It's not true.
It's bullshit.
I did not hit her.
I did not.
Oh, hi Mark.
This is the beginning of a scene.
We talk about the movie.
Make the movie about the movie.
In this case, The Room.
Keep in mind, I created this scene 14 years ago.
Actually, to be accurate, 15 years ago.
If you wanna be accurate, actually 17 years ago.
I was writing the script, so.
This scene's talking about the character,
Tommy, talking about myself, he doesn't remember the line.
Okay, okay, line.
[All] I did not hit her.
It's not true.
It's bullshit.
I did not hit her.
I did not.
Oh, hi Mark.
So, they repeat the same scene over and over,
which is, I wanna stress that, we did not
repeat six to seven times, we actually
repeat only, I believe four or five times.
Even 17 times is way, way too much.
You would never finish your movie.
Action.
Action!
Action, action!
So now, Seth Rogen, right here,
which is very cool thing, as you know,
when they say, some of those actors get afraid. (laughs)
In this case, James exaggerate with the situation,
and say, okay, I don't hear what he's saying,
which is very cool, very quirky stuff,
that I think audience would enjoy that,
because very natural way, without forcing, which I enjoyed.
Say it loud, I can't hear in here.
Say action so I can hear.
Let me say about detail, I would say,
details are very important.
In this scene, you see the flowers,
you see the, it's a green screen, as you notice.
But that's what happened on the set, The Room.
So, they duplicate the scene very much, very good.
So, the same scene you actually
see in the Blu-ray of The Room.
[Sandy] Action.
I don't know if you guys noticed, we're using two cameras.
On the set of The Room, we actually use the two cameras.
That's the fact.
It's not a fantasy, okay?
Why, you may ask, why?
The reason I use the two cameras,
because at the time, I did the research,
and we, I couldn't find that any, for example,
what's the difference between HD and 35?
So, I wanted to do it, I said, okay,
it'll be great thing to do the format,
because no one in the world shot
any feature movie with two format,
which I was happy about it.
Somebody give me credit someday, never mind all that.
I think The Room is subtle history, you know?
[All] It's bullshit.
I did not hit her.
I did not.
Oh, hi Mark.
In this case, you see very clearly, script here.
That this guy doing?
Question mark.
Sitting on his chair doing nothing.
He's supposed to be script supervisor.
He should go his fat ass, and help the actor.
Not just sitting here.
Nonsense.
Very bad.
But again, this is my choice, I'd say,
Do your job, we pay you to be,
what you wanna be, not just sitting.
[2nd Assistant Camera] Teen.
[Sandy] Action.
I hit her.
No!
Do you wanna change the line?
By the way, on the set, The Room, did not happen that way,
because I was in charge, I had my script in my hand.
Actually, when you see my pants, I have a script.
I always carry with me.
Okay, sometimes one page, sometimes more pages,
and also, I have money, too. (laughs)
Never mind that one.
I don't see any script in this hands.
Like, even, he make mistake.
He should remove, if he has it.
It's bullshit.
I did not hit her.
I did no--
So, this is very important situation here.
The time while he say, I did not.
Now, he's going to this trance like, I did not.
So, in this case, if I direct this, I would say,
James, we need more energy here, as well as,
We need more emotion.
In the film industry, people have tendencies,
especially critique, I notice, that they don't understand
that you do not have formula.
Any scene works if you have the beginning, middle, the end.
So, you can do the scene as a monotone.
You can do the scene as a very emotional.
And I think emotion's very important.
I did not.
Oh, hi Mark.
What the fu, where are you looking?
When, he say, Oh, hi Mark, right,
this is a transition.
So, this is very important, he did such a great job.
So, if you look at the original, you say,
Wow, he match pretty good, because on purpose,
you have a pause between the phrases.
So, here.
[Sandy] You're looking at the camera!
What?
This is very good, quirky thing
because he look at the camera.
I'll be honest with you, I did look in the camera.
I'm not scared to say, all actors, we all actors do.
If somebody say, he didn't or she didn't,
he or she's lying, basically.
Action.
You have a detail here, for example, water here, right?
Look at him, he's half sleepy, he doesn't care.
Now, why he doesn't care?
Because he say, Hey, I don't, whatever.
Scene does not work, but it's a good
reaction between these two.
You can see very clearly, they don't watch.
He's just disappointed, scene does not work.
Look at his posture, for example.
And they always play opposite.
You see it, do you see what I mean?
So, even, for example, if he is drinking this
the way he's drinking, if he does,
it will not be interesting.
Now, it's more interest.
Now, you have more detail here.
You have this one here, here, and you have wardrobe.
So, we don't see too much, but we still see,
lookit, we see the ladder,
et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
We see his watch.
Why we see his watch?
Well, he's script supervisor, so I guess
he have to look at the watch.
So that's basically what we have.
It's not true.
I did not hit her.
It's bullshit.
Ugh.
Argh!
Now here, the same thing.
The character he played, Greg, David,
see, he has his bottle here.
He's thinking about more the bottle,
than actually what he want to do physical.
In this case, if I direct this, I say,
kill this, meaning, eliminate the bottle,
you don't have to hold it, but typical actor situation here,
any actors like to hold something, because we get nervous.
Maybe he's nervous, that's why he hold it.
So, as you noticed that Davey,
play Greg, go to Tommy, and then say,
Okay, I will give you.
This is what actually happened at the set of The Room.
So I'm very happy to notice this, that actually happened.
Because I'm very frustrated, because actually,
I hit myself for sure, on here,
on the edge of this little construction thing.
It did hurt. (laughs)
Maybe just use this.
Now, this is like, he give me idea
about the bottle again.
You know, this is actually inaccurate,
because on the set of The Room, I said,
Let me throw at something.
I don't know guys, you knew, but with Greg,
we have the game, we actually play with the bottle.
We did this at the time when we was stuck in the airport.
We didn't have a football, so we play with a little bottle.
Empty bottle, let me tell you, is not easy to catch.
And so, they throw at you, okay, you can try that.
He'd throw it, do something crazy.
Use the bottle. Oh, show emotion.
Yes.
That's easy part.
You know, I would say, monkey see monkey do.
Never mind that one. (laughs)
See, Greg?
These other guys, these other people,
they don't care like you care.
Now, here's pretty good statement,
when he say, They don't care.
On the set of The Room, we say many times,
I say many times to Greg, I say,
They don't care, this is fact.
One of the scene, if you watch Disaster Artist,
you will see, James playing me,
he confront crew with a recording.
Actually, we did record on the set, everything.
And some of the behavior was very disrespectful.
Let's be nice, okay?
Me and you man, you got this!
Show emotion?
Yes!
Okay, I'll do it. Okay, all right.
Here, the reaction of crew is right on the money.
What this means is that actually,
that's what happened on the set, The Room.
We changed the crew four times for your information.
Not one, not twice, four, okay?
The reason was for because people try to tamper my vision.
I, to be honest with you, a lot of stuff was new for me.
Okay, but sometimes I will say,
I'm sorry, we not on the same page.
So, we let these people go.
But it's good reaction, again, this is the thing,
what the people react if they don't like something,
just do the physical thing.
[Sandy] Action.
I did not hit her.
It's not true.
It's bullshit.
I did not hit her.
I did not.
Oh, hi Mark.
So, here, it's a great reaction from the crew.
This is, did not happen, The Room.
(crew applauds)
The Disaster Artist, not a parody,
but he could, I'm talking about James team,
could do that if they wishes.
But he decided to be much more serious.
And, this is my take, based on what I see the audience,
they appreciate that, because the realness is better,
than making just fun of it.
You know, some people, everybody can do, it's easy to do.
Oh, he did a bad job, everything's bad.
You know I'm saying?
People don't realize, if you have a drama,
let's assume that, right, any movie,
they say, Oh, God, this is such a great drama.
I bet you, you have something
which is comedy, within the drama.
Vice versa, if you talk about comedy,
you have one or two elements, as we talk about today,
you will find the drama, too.
So The Room, for example, is not melodrama.
It's a comedy slash drama.
Original, it's supposed to be drama,
but let me say, one more time, there's nothing wrong
when you have a comedy with a drama.
I'm a real rebel here, but I love all of you guys.
And thank you for listening.
We got it done!
