On Tuesday, Kate Middleton went on her first solo engagement in more than a year, a visit to London’s Royal Marsden Hospital, where she was treated for an unidentified form of cancer in 2024. In an Instagram post sharing photos from the day, the Princess of Wales revealed that she was officially in remission following her diagnosis early last year.

“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery,” she wrote in the caption. “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead.”

The post was the first time that the princess or her spokespeople have used the word “remission.” In September, Kate indicated that she had completed treatment and had been told that she was “cancer-free,” without sharing any further information about her health status or future prognosis.

“My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything,” the princess added in her Instagram post. “We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional.”

Kate’s solo visit came with the announcement that she would be joining her husband, Prince William, as a co-patron of the Royal Marsden Hospital. William became the hospital’s president in 2007, following in the footsteps of his late mother, Princess Diana, and in 2022, he became the hospital’s Patron.

Before this week, Kensington Palace had declined to share information about where Kate has received her treatments. During her visit to the Royal Marsden, Kate revealed that she had already made a few private visits to the hospital. On Tuesday, she shared a few more details about her own cancer treatment in conversation with patients. While speaking to patient Katherine Field, Kate said she had received a port, an implantable device used to draw blood and deliver treatments, according to The Telegraph.

“I got so attached to it,” the princess joked, to the point that she hesitated when medical staff told her “you can have it taken out.”
