Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande surprised fans when they walked the Golden Globes 2025 red carpet in colors other than pink and green, breaking from their sartorial tie-in promotional strategy for the first half of the two-part musical. The past year has seen the two donning different tints of their characters’ signature hues, so to see Grande roll into Sunday’s festivities in pale yellow, with Erivo in black and white, was as much a shock as Galinda dropping the “Guh.”
Grande wore a Givenchy Haute Couture gown designed by Hubert de Givenchy in 1966, when actor Audrey Hepburn was the designer’s primary muse. The pale yellow silk gown was cut on the bias and had a hand-beaded bodice. The gown was sourced from Rita Watnick’s vintage shop, Lily et Cie.
Erivo, meanwhile, swapped her typical green for a black Louis Vuitton gown with all-over silver patterned details. The dress featured a plunging V-neckline and spaghetti straps, as well as an exaggerated peplum at the hip. She also showed off intricate purple and green nail art, which she said took five hours to create, adding a touch of Elphaba to her red-carpet ensemble.
Speaking to E! on the red carpet, Erivo winked at her decision to stray from her green gowns.
“We have to keep everyone guessing. Green is Elphaba’s skin color, but what she wears a lot is black,” she said, adding that she was “bringing green in occasionally,” as with her manicure.
Since the film’s second installment doesn’t hit theaters until November, there’s undoubtedly much, much more to come as the long march to the Emerald City continues (think puce, magenta, and chartreuse).
The two have held space aplenty for light cosplay in support of the film, donning their characters’ signature colors as far back as last February’s Super Bowl game, some nine months before the movie premiered in theaters. They wore sequined Louis Vuitton jerseys to attend the game together, with Erivo sporting a spangled green number featuring a pink stripe across the chest and “Elphaba” emblazoned across the back, while Grande showed off the inverse color scheme, with “Glinda” bedazzled between her shoulder blades, of course.

Since then, they’ve given Wicked fans plenty of fashion Easter eggs to “rejoicify” over, appearing together in various combinations of Glinda pink and Elphaba green, following in the thematic-dress footsteps of Margot Robbie’s Barbie press tour and Zendaya’s Challengers and Dune: Part Two wardrobes before them. The two presented at the 2024 Oscars, attended the Met Gala 2024, and more, all decked out in different takes on the hues.
Wicked is up for four awards at Sunday evening’s Golden Globes, including best musical-or-comedy motion picture, as well as best female actor in a musical-or-comedy motion picture for Erivo and a nomination for the corresponding supporting-female-actor category for Grande.
